The trust will provide funds so that patients on its current IVF waiting list may receive treatment but no new patients will be added to the list.

Patients, on the waiting list, who’ve yet to start treatment will have one cycle paid for whilst those who have already had one cycle will receive funding for one further cycle to a maximum of two.

NHS Stockport provides funds for an average of 68 patients a year to receive IVF at St Marys Hospital in Manchester at an annual cost of around a third of a million pounds.

But during consultations with community groups in the borough, IVF funding has consistently been seen as a low priority by people in Stockport.

The US study of 560 women (who had an average age of 35) undergoing fertility treatment found that those with type blood type O were twice as likely to have an FSH level greater than 10 as those in any other blood group.

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) readings were measured in this research. FSH, a well known marker of fertility, gives an overall indication of the ovarian reserve, which is the capacity of the ovary to provide eggs that are capable of fertilization resulting in a healthy pregnancy. Ovarian reserve tends to decline significantly as a woman reaches her middle and late 30s and faster in the early 40s.

Worried? It is still early days. Further large-scale research among the general population, and not just those seeking fertility help should be carried out.

NICE guidelines recommend women aged 23 – 39 who have an identified cause for their infertility, or have been infertile for three years, should be given three cycles of IVF on the NHS.

Under the new rules IVF is restricted to women above a certain age or in exceptional circumstances.

While health bosses are battling to save even more cash to balance their books, couples affected have already worried that their chances of having families will be compromised.
